ABOUT

DARNELDA HAS SERVED AS A COUNCILLOR FOR THE DISTRICT OF SECHELT FOR SEVEN YEARS. SHE UNDERSTANDS HOW THE DISTRICT WORKS AND SEES SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVING OUR COMMUNITY.

Through a bit of planning and a lot of hard work, Darnelda has successfully managed her many roles as Councillor, small business owner, wife, mother, and caring friend. After growing up and going to school in Medicine Hat, she married and started raising a family with her husband Adrian. They spent a few years in Edmonton and then moved to Calgary where they spent 15 years before moving to Sechelt in 2009.

Darnelda’s educational background includes a Diploma in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Education Degree with double majors in Mathematics and Business Education. She worked as a Secretary-Treasurer for a small School Board in Alberta prior to returning to the University of Alberta, as a mature student with three young children, to get her teaching degree. Darnelda taught high school Mathematics and Business Education for a number of years before accepting a position as a Software Implementation Specialist for an educational software company. That position allowed her to work and travel throughout Canada and internationally for a number of years and was instrumental in her choice to move to the Sunshine Coast.

Darnelda is now a licensed mortgage broker, working exclusively with people to find financing for their private homes. She does not arrange financing for developers or development.

On the Sunshine Coast Darnelda has contributed her time and efforts to:

  • Seniors Planning Table
  • Sunshine Coast Housing Committee
  • Sunshine Coast Homelessness Advisory Committee
  • Sechelt Library Board
  • Planning and Community Development Committee
  • Finance, Culture and Economic Development Committee
  • Public Works, Parks and Environment Committee
  • Coast Community Builders Association and Sechelt Chamber of Commerce

Darnelda is a life-long learner. This year, through Dalhousie University, she completed a four-month Executive Certificate in Local Government which had her explore local government issues through articles and interviews with experts and Government leaders at all levels across the country.

On a personal note, Darnelda is a voracious reader and enjoys cooking, baking, and preserving food. She believes that food security is important for the future of the Sunshine Coast. Music has always played an important role her life and she is excited to be able to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of the Coast.

Darnelda is known as a “connector” - a person that seems to know who to talk to about almost any subject. She brings her relationships to the role of Mayor, knowing that many of the larger opportunities for Sechelt are going to involve working with a wide range of people, organizations and governments.
